3 Pro Tips For New Podcasters
-
In our everyday lives we may accidentally finish people’s sentences to put it nicely. No big deal. However, this is a huge no-no in podcasting for a few really important reasons:
1) Your guest may find it rude. Of course, there is never malicious intent behind it, but continual interruptions can significantly deteriorate the quality of a conversation and make it difficult to create your best content.
2) Lower quality clips. If you plan to take your best bits and share them on social media, those little hits to the quality of conversation are even more significant in a 30-second clip. It can quickly take an A+ clip down to a B.
3) Poor listening experience for your audience. It’s difficult to notice in person, but interruptions can make it really hard to understand what the speaker is saying for the listener.
Remember, mistakes happen. If you accidentally interrupt your guest, it is by no means the end of the world. The point we want to hammer home is do your best to minimise the amount of interruptions. They matter.
-
If you read our previous point, odds are you now suddenly feel very self-conscious about accidentally interrupting your guests. But what do you do instead? Use body language.
A really common habit for people during conversation is to use expressions like ‘yeah’, ‘right’, ‘mhm’, ‘hmm’, you get the picture. Let’s be clear, It’s a great thing to acknowledge who you’re speaking to and use active listening skills. The problem during podcasting this can be another distraction to your audience.
The pros do something different, and it’s really simple. They give a nod.
Along with eye contact, the occasional nod shows you’re actively listening, and leave’s the floor to your guest to speak clearly for the best possible listening experience.

Your time is valuable, literally. With a limited amount of time in your session, you want to make sure you get through everything you need to.
There’s nothing worse than having 10 minutes left in your recording and realising you still had 3 more topics to discuss.
This is simple, but just remember to keep track of time. The pros will even plan ahead how long they want to spend on each topic to make sure everything goes according to plan.
